-Here I have created a blog post that will try to convince slave owners to free their slaves. This post is mainly directed to the slave owners; however, it may also be directed to the slave owners wife and children, who may be able to influence him.
In U.S. history, statutes passed by Congress in 1793 and 1850 (and repealed in 1864) that provided for the seizure and return of runaway slaves who escaped from one state into another or into a federal territory. The 1793 law enforced Article IV, Section 2, of the U.S. Constitution in authorizing any federal district judge or circuit court judge, or any state magistrate, to decide finally and without a jury trial the status of an alleged fugitive slave. The measure met with strong opposition in the Northern states, some of which enacted personal-liberty laws to hamper the execution of the federal law; these laws provided that fugitives who appealed from an original decision against them were entitled to a jury trial. As early as 1810 individual dissatisfaction with the law of 1793 had taken the form of systematic assistance rendered to black slaves escaping from the South to New England or Canada—via the Underground Railroad. Dear Slave-owners:
My name is Edwina M. Hill and I am a slavery abolitionist. I am writing this letter to you because I and the members of my association feel that you should free your slaves; not because we feel slavery is wrong but because we (blacks) want to live side-by-side and in harmony with you (whites). We know how valuable blacks are to you as far as cotton crops are concerned; however, we also realize that the black slaves are severely unhappy. We know that you may have experienced a great deal of your slaves running away in the middle of the night or rebelling against you at any given time before they were hanged or beaten to death after you caught them. We are here to let you know that there is a better way. If you want to keep your "slaves" and "servants" and are willing to make changes, you will need to do one or more of the following things:
1. Treat your "slaves" as real people instead of 1/3 of a person.
2. Set reasonable work/school schedules.
3. Allow your "slaves" to go to school and learn with your fellow white peers.
4. You are no longer the "Master", you are an EQUAL.
5. Compensate your workers for their work at a reasonable rate which is negotiable between you and your worker and will rise annually and with the quality of the work done.
6. Plant other crops that you will be able to make money from; such as peanut, sweet potato crops and their derivatives. You will be able to process these and make cheese, milk, coffee, flour, ink, dyes, plastics, wood stains, soap, medicinal oils, vinegar, molasses, rubber and postage stamp glue and market these in order to make money for your well being; as George Washington Carver suggests.
7. Free your black slaves and let them live their lives in peace.
We all know that most of you slaves owners think I am crazy for writing such a document, however, in some states the above recommendations are being executed and life there is wonderful. I, for example, am living in one of the regions where blacks and whites are equal and we are all living the best lives while helping each other out in the markets and in our homes. That is one reason why I am able to write such a letter to you because of my white peers who are reaching out to their white peers and are allowing my letters to be printed in their newspapers and pamphlets.
I know that this letter may not affect anyone, but my organization and I just wanted to inform you that there are options that you can take advantage of to stop the killings and enslavement of blacks.
